National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he called an “unjustified and impulsive” protest following the arrest of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

During a live interview on Onua TV on June 11, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah addressed the circumstances surrounding Wontumi's arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He clarified that EOCO invited Wontumi to answer allegations related to illegal mining (galamsey) and breach of contract, before formally arresting him.

“Wontumi was not abducted. He was invited, questioned, and granted bail in accordance with legal procedures,” Asiedu Nketiah said.
“So why did NPP MPs, led by Afenyo-Markin, resort to sitting on the floor in protest at EOCO’s premises?”

Chairman Wontumi was later granted bail set at GH¢50,000 with two sureties, pending further legal action. EOCO stated that he could be released only after satisfying the bail conditions, or be taken to court within 48 hours.

Asiedu Nketiah slammed the conduct of NPP lawmakers and party leaders, saying their actions disrespected the rule of law and undermined institutions designed to fight corruption.

“Political leaders must exhibit maturity and avoid dramatics. Instead of turning everything into theatrics, why not support the legal process and let institutions work?” he asked.

He further encouraged the NPP to adopt a more rational and constructive approach to national issues, especially when it involves allegations of corruption against senior party members.
